Music tutoring & instruction.

  • Lessons.

one-on-one instruction (in-person and/or remote) on your given instrument. We begin with songs and concepts you would like to learn right away, then add other ideas I feel will help your playing and learning. I like to build musical concepts around fun and enjoyable learning; when possible!

  • Playing songs.

it’s all about songs, isn’t it? My personal teaching style includes having you learning and playing songs as soon as possible. You come to me with your favorite songs and sounds, and we learn them together. I may finish the race before the student, but we each learn so much from each other at the finish line.

  • Ear training.

Learning intervals and how they work within chordal and melodic harmony is incredibly important for any musician - especially for those looking to advance their playing careers into an artistic high school or university. We will review intervalic relationships through contemporary concepts and jazz harmony.

  • Contemporary music theory.

I’ve used this term quite a bit on the website. My teaching style is rooted in the contemporary style, aka the Berklee way. I teach music theory in a more modern jazz style which in its simplest explanation is a way to show a musician your ideas in the quickest, yet most efficient way possible.

  • Live playing.

it is not required, but I always try to suggest anyone taking lessons to also book a live session once and a while. I hire other musicians and we join together to play in a live, “without a net” type of setting. It’s incredibly beneficial to play with others. It keeps you in time!

  • Composition.

outside of instrumental lessons, i also get asked a lot about songwriting and compositional lessons. No matter your instrument, we will review chord progressions, different combo writing, advanced harmonic concepts for bands and small groups.
